AID: An Energy Efficient Decoding Scheme for LDPC Codes in Wireless Body Area Sensor Networks

Abstract: One of the major challenges in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) is to prolong the lifetime of network. Traditional research work focuses on minimizing transmit power; however, in the case of short range communication the consumption power in decoding is significantly larger than transmit power. This paper investigates the minimization of total power consumption by reducing the decoding power consumption. For achieving a desired Bit Error Rate (BER), we introduce some fundamental results on the basis of iter… Show more

“…For this reason, authors of [30] proposed the use of short-length LDPC codes in WSN in order to mitigate the LDPC decoder effect and provide acceptable Bit Error Rate (BER). An Adaptive Iterative Decoding (AID) approach exploiting a threshold on the number of iterations of decoding algorithm for a certain BER is proposed in [33] . This approach with iterative LDPC decoding lowered the network energy consumption by 20-25%.…”

“…These techniques are too expensive or even not possible due to very strict energy constraints and asymmetric wireless channels. Erasure Codes (EC) allow to enhance the reliability of data transmissions by transmitting redundant data [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Applying such methods in WSNs faces the challenge of supporting more or less complex methods for tiny sensors.…”
