An Ahp Application to Evaluate Scoring Criteria for Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (Fmea)

Abstract: <p>The Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) has been developed by several researchers who have proposed distinct reference tables to score the Severity, Occurrence and Detection of a failure. This paper aims to evaluate, using AHP, several proposals for the application of Process FMEA, as well as to obtain and offer recommendations for its application. Five reference tables for Severity, six tables for Occurrence, and six tables for Detection are presented. These reference tables are evaluated for the… Show more

“…The concept of AHP and other pairwise comparison based techniques is based on the fact that it is much easier to make comparisons than direct evaluations. AHP [7] and other MCDM (Multiple-criteria decision-making) [8] methods have already been applied to improve FMEA studies by determining the weights of the S, O and D numbers to provide more interpretable RPNs and select a reference table that better reflects the judgments of the FMEA team [9] . Fuzzy approaches [10] including fuzzy AHP was also used to develop the limitations of the FMEA [11] , especially for the RPN calculation [12] and for a more accurate risk assessment [13] .…”

“…With the help of Eq. (14) the estimated observation indices of the remaining four unknown risks are [4 , 7 , 9 , 1] in both cases when the calculations are based on the original A and the corrected Ac matrices.

“…RCM processes frequently utilize four-point scales within the military community (NAVAIR, 2005; Department of Defense, 2012). The reader is referred to Aguilar and Salomon for a comparison of different scales (Aguiar, de Souza, & Salomon, 2010).…”

“…Through a survey in some companies in the automotive segment, Aguiar et al (2010) conclude that most of people who know and use FMEA do not see it as a powerful tool, but as something that needs to be done in order to satisfy regulatory requirements. One of the main reasons for this approach is that most FMEA are erroneously constructed and used.…”

“…Currently, the quality systems of Brazilian companies in the automotive sector follow the technical specification ISO/TS 16949 that somehow have inherited FMEA requirement from QS-9000 system. According to Aguiar et al (2010), FMEA should be used to perform risk assessment of understanding what the impacts on the costumer if the process were to fail. The team must analyze any action to minimize the risks of process and guide improvement activities.…”
