An inactivated vaccine for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia

Abstract: The results from several experiments demonstrated that an effective vaccine for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia could be made with inactivated F38 mycoplasma. Evaluation of the amounts of lyophilised F38 mycoplasma plus saponin showed that the optimum formulation was 0.15 mg of mycoplasma in saponin. Saponin inactivates the mycoplasma and provides the adjuvant effect necessary to stimulate a protective immune response. The lyophilised F38 mycoplasma could be stored for 14 months at either 4 degrees C or 22 … Show more

“…A reference batch of CCPP vaccine was produced by CIRAD, as described by Rurangirwa [16], but with slight modification of the published protocol, including inactivation before freeze-drying. Briefly, the Mccp antigen consisted of a four-day culture of the “Abomsa” strain.…”

“…The vaccines against CCPP consist of inactivated Mccp antigen with saponin as an adjuvant [16]. If effective, these vaccines should induce marked seroconversion, and this need-s to be investigated furher.…”

“…Current mycoplasma vaccines are generally either live or inactivated preparations of whole organisms (10,23,29,34). There has been little success with subunit vaccines or recombinant proteins (35), and this is especially true for CBPP, for which the only Office International des Epizootes-recommended vaccines are freeze-dried live formulations (strain T 1 44 or its streptomycin-resistant derivative T 1 SR).…”

“…18 The possible occurrence of CCPP in wild herbivores in contact with livestock has been investigated in Kenya. 17 Isolation of mycoplasmas other than Mccp has been reported in other wild species such as the Rocky mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis), mouflon (Ovis musimon), aoudad (Ammotragus lervi), 14,23 and Vaal rhebok (Pelea capreolus). 13 perimental infection of a single Thompson's gazelle (Gazella thompsoni) with Mycoplasma mycoides subsp.…”
