An inkjet-printed electrowetting valve for paper-fluidic sensors

Abstract: Paper-fluidic devices have become an emerging trend for micro total analysis systems (microTAS) in the bioengineering field due to their ability to maintain the rapid, sensitive and specific attributes of microfluidic devices. Subsequently, paper-fluidic devices are also more portable, have a lower production cost and are easier to use. However, one of the obstacles in developing paper fluidic devices is the limited ability to control the rate of fluid flow during an assay. In our project, we use electrowettin… Show more

“…Notably, if one replaces ܽ = ‫ݎ/1‬ and ݈ = ‫ݎ‬ − ‫ݎ‬ , the prediction of eqn. (8) coincides with the radial imbibition of sector-shaped porous media, 15,16 where ‫ݎ‬ is the radius of the wetted area at t = 0, as illustrated in Table 1. Indeed, this solution was firstly reported for the radial flow penetrating parallel disks from a small orifice of radius ‫ݎ‬ with infinite liquid supply 26 .…”

“…Additional tools for switching on flow rely on simple user-activated mechanical means 16,17,18 . Most recently, several active methods for the switching on of flows have been developed, including eletrowetting of a dielectric in a porous channel 19 and the use of magnetically-actuated valves 20 .…”
