The anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) have been consistently associated with semantic processing which, in turn, has a key role in reading aloud single words. This study aimed to investigate (1) the reading abilities in patients with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), and (2) the relationship between gray matter (GM) volume of the left ATL and word reading performance using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). Three groups of participants (svPPA, Alzheimer’s Disease, AD and healthy elderly adults) performed a reading task with exception words, regular words and pseudowords, along with a structural magnetic resonance imaging scan. For exception words, the svPPA group had a lower accuracy and a greater number of regularization errors as compared to the control groups of healthy participants and AD patients. Similarly, for regular words, svPPA patients had a lower accuracy in comparison with AD patients, and a greater number of errors related to complex orthography-to-phonology mappings (OPM) in comparison to both control groups. VBM analyses revealed that GM volume of the left ATL was associated with the number of regularization errors. Also, GM volume of the left lateral ATL was associated with the number of errors with complex OPM during regular word reading. Our results suggest that the left ATL might play a role in the reading of exception words, in accordance with its role in semantic processing. Results further support the involvement of the left lateral ATL in combinatorial processes, including the integration of semantic and phonological information, for both exception and regular words.

Este livro fala de pessoas. De pessoas que brincam, correm, passeiam e se comunicam. Que são amadas, levam bronca, fazem tolices e surpreendem como qualquer um. Pessoas que podem ter mais interesse na roda de um carrinho, que no brinquedo em si, mas que são capazes de aprender outras formas de brincar, empurrando, colocando bonequinhos, abrindo e fechando a porta ou lavando-os com água e sabão. Pessoas que se comunicam gritando, chorando, falando, apontando, ou pegando na mão do adulto para mostrar o que querem, mas que podem ser ensinadas a apontar e trocar pictogramas impressos, ou expressarem seus interesses, desejos e necessidades, utilizando um comunicador ou dispositivo móvel. Pessoas que podem se sentir mais confortáveis sozinhas, mas que demonstrarão prazer em estar com quem as respeitem. Este livro foi escrito por pessoas que pesquisam, trabalham, convivem com pessoas com TEA-Transtorno do Espectro Autista. Fruto da discussão do II Simpósio sobre Ambientes de Aprendizagem para Crianças Autistas, que aconteceu em setembro de 2014 na Universidade Federal Fluminense, Polo Universitário de Volta Redonda, a obra envolveu um grupo de 15 autores de associações e universidades de várias regiões do país. Os temas abordados por psicólogos, fonoaudiólogos, pedagogos, médicos e familiares trouxeram informações sobre o diagnóstico e a intervenção precoce, a compreensão da aquisição da linguagem e apresentaram as possibilidades terapêuticas e a legislação sobre autismo. Na área de educação e inclusão, mostraram a possibilidade do uso de ambientes virtuais de aprendizagem para estimular o letramento, registro de leitura de histórias infantis para o monitoramento do processo e a possibilidade do uso de jogos digitais com a criança com autismo. Finalmente, o livro trouxe à tona a difícil e morosa tarefa da remoção das barreiras atitudinais, barreiras que implicam mudanças culturais e comportamentais. Os idealizadores, o grupo de pesquisa e de extensão do projeto Ambiente Digital de Aprendizagem para Crianças Autistas, foram muito felizes ao imprimirem ao evento um caráter interdisciplinar. É de se aplaudir os esforços dos organizadores do livro, por terem conseguido reunir questões centrais como comunicação, interação e aprendizagem de pessoas com autismo, e pela possibilidade de disseminar informações, que auxiliarão a construção de uma sociedade mais inclusiva, justa e humanitária Rio de Janeiro, janeiro de 2015.
