Anti‐ige autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: IgG and IgM autoantibodies directed against IgE were determined in 95 serum samples from 67 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. IgM anti-IgE autoantibodies were found in 18 patients (27%) and IgG anti-IgE autoantibodies were detected in 23 patients (34%). The specificity of the immunoassay was confirmed by the ability to inhibit binding with IgE myeloma, but not other immunoglobulin isotypes and the demonstration that the reactivity was directed to the Fc E frag… Show more

“…In our own experience and in other reports [12][13][14]19], a correlation exists between the levels of IgG anti-IgE and serum IgE in patients with high titers of serum IgE. How ever, no correlation was detectable between the level of IgG with auto-anti-IgE activity and the severity of disease.…”

“…One can speculate from this that the immune complex IgEanti-IgE is responsible for underestimation of serum IgE [21]. Some authors [7,12] have also reported that anti-IgE can bind to IgE molecules on mast cells and basophils, re sulting in the release of chemical mediators.…”

“…In RA patients anti-IgE autoantibodies were found [34,35]. Moreover, IgE in immune complexes was assumed to sensitize RA synovial mast cells [36]. …”

“…Additionally, some reports have shown increased IgE production in this disease and have associated SLE with allergy (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). In addition, the occurrence of anti-IgE IgG autoantibodies has been demonstrated in SLE patients with articular involvement, lymphadenopathy and anti-DNA antibodies (9). The human Th2 immune response is mainly observed in atopy and in some parasitic diseases, being characterized by significant production of IL-4, IL-10 and IgE antibodies.…”
