Antidiarrheal Effect of Lime Peel Extract on Bisacodyl-Induced Mice

Abstract: Background: Diarrhea is a condition of increased fecal water content of more than 200 grams or 200 ml/24 hours with a liquid or semi-liquid consistency. Complications of diarrhea, dehydration and malnutrition are still world health problems. Lime peel extract contains tannins which have astringent properties. Tannins are indicated as an alternative anti-diarrheal agent by tightening and forming a protective layer on the intestinal mucosa thereby reducing osmolarity.Aim: To examine the consistency, fecal water … Show more

“…The astringent properties of tannins have been suggested as a possible mechanism underlying their antidiarrheal effects. By decreasing intestinal secretions and promoting the tightening of the intestinal mucosa, tannins may contribute to the alleviation of diarrhea [ 105 , 121 ].…”

“…Plant secondary metabolites play their antidiarrheal roles using various mechanisms. For example, plants containing alkaloids, favonoids, saponins, glycosides, and terpenoids modulate intestinal motility [100][101][102][103][104]; tannins and saponins preserve intestinal mucosal integrity [105,106]; alkaloids, favonoids, coumarins, glycosides, and terpenoids promote fuid absorption [101,107,108], favonoids activate antioxidant pathways [109]; favonoids, coumarins, glycosides, and terpenoids exert anti-infammatory efects Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine [110][111][112][113][114]; favonoids, saponins, glycosides, and terpenoids demonstrate antimicrobial activity against diarrheal pathogens [115][116][117][118], tannins, saponins, and terpenoids suppress intestinal secretions [105,119]; and terpenoids modulate gut microfora [108].…”

“…Diarrhea is defecation or defecation with liquid or semi-solid stools. The water content of the stool is more than usual, more than 200 gm or 200 ml/24 hours [16]. According to Elizabeth J Crown, Diarrhea is an increase in the dilution and frequency of stool.…”
