Antioxidant and cytotoxic studies for kaempferol, quercetin and isoquercitrin

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate a cytotoxic oxidative cell stress related and the antioxidant profile of kaempferol, quercetin, and isoquercitrin. The flavonol compounds were able to act as scavengers of superoxide anion (but not hydrogen peroxide), hypochlorous acid, chloramine and nitric oxide. Although flavonoids are widely described as antioxidants and this activity is generally related to beneficial effects on human health, here we show important cytotoxic actions of three well known flavo… Show more

“…Quercetin was the more efficient agent against HOCl possessing a low IC 50 (0.0008 mM). Isoquercitrin and kaempferol had similar potential as scavengers of HOCl, respectively 0.0018 and 0.0020 mM IC 50 values (Vellosa et al 2011).…”

“…Those samples were effective superoxide scavengers. It had been observed that quercetin (IC 50 = 0.025 mM) was a powerful superoxide scavenger agent followed by isoquercitrin (IC 50 = 0.111 mM) and kaempferol (IC 50 = 0.243 mM) (Vellosa et al 2011).…”

“…In vitro studies comparing the antioxidant effect of flavonols (glycosides and aglycones) confirmed that their protective efficacy against lipid peroxidation reaction were mediated by free radicalscavenging activities [3,7] . However, it has been reported that these substances may also be cytotoxic and damage the cell membrane (mainly erythrocytes) in the presence of ROS, and thereby become extremely harmful to living organisms them selves [28] . Boligon et al [29] disagreed with this study and, therefore, analyzed the protective effects of flavonoids against chromosome damage induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) n human lymphocytes.…”

“…The structures for kaempferol and quercetin were given [ Figure 11]. 47 In the present study, two of the phytochemicals namely kaempferol and quercetin were analyzed by TLC and HPLC methods. The R f values noted for kaempferol was 0.47 and for quercetin, 0.62 after examining the yellow fluorescent spots under UV.…”
