Are Food Deserts Also Play Deserts?

Abstract: Although food deserts are areas that lack easy access to food outlets and considered a barrier to a healthy diet and a healthy weight among residents, food deserts typically comprise older urban areas which may have many parks and street configurations that could facilitate more physical activity. However, other conditions may limit the use of available facilities in these areas. This paper assesses the use of parks in two Pittsburgh food desert neighborhoods by using systematic observation. We found that whil… Show more

“…Lower-income-area parks also have less than half as many supervised areas (Cohen, Han, Nagel, et al, 2016). In one study, parks in Pittsburgh food-desert neighborhoods (i.e., mostly urban areas that lack easy access to food outlets) were found to be accessible and generally considered safe but sat mostly empty (Cohen, Hunter, et al, 2016).…”

“…The limestone and dolomite used in the experiments were obtained from Nanjing, China. The modified sorbent with a maximum particle size of < 125 μm was made with RHA and calcined limestone in the process of hydration (denoted as sorbent M Si/Ca = 0.2) 31. The chemical compositions of the tested sorbents, determined with an ARL ADVANT'XP X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer made in the USA, are shown in Tab.…”

“…Orthogonal design tests were conducted in a twin fixed‐bed reactor system to examine the effects of different reaction conditions on the CO 2 capture characteristics. The SO 2 concentrations ( C SO2 ) were varied, and multicycle runs were carried out to determine the CO 2 and SO 2 capture capacities for limestone, dolomite, and limestone modified with rice husk ash (RHA) in the hydration process 31.…”

“…Os achados deste trabalho confirmam os de estudos prévios, apesar disto, cabe destacar que somente a presença de locais de prática de atividade física não implica sua utilização, uma vez que estruturas precárias e falta de incentivo são fatores que podem constituir barreiras 46 . Dessa forma, as políticas para a diminuição da prevalência de obesidade no município devem ser direcionadas ao aumento de estruturas públicas para atividade física em conjunto com a implantação de programas para estas atividades.…”
