Argon and krypton Auger spectra induced by ion bombardment of aluminium and silicon surfaces

Abstract: Measuremenu are reponed of Auger (autoionization) spectra of AI and Kr produced by bombarding AI and Si substrates with Art and Kr* ions in the 110 eV-5 keV energy m g e . These are shown to be coflsistenl wilh the simple Doppler model suggested, for Ne on AI and Si, in a previous paper. Once corrected using the model, the observed Auger energies are shown to correspond lo lheoretical predictions produced using D-Fock calculations.

“…More recently Blum et al [12] and Nixon et al [13] reported the production of the autoionizing states of Ar in the scattering of Ar + on Mg, Al and Si, which we and, previously, other authors [14] did not observe. The object of this note is to attempt to explain this rather strange discrepancy, which, as we shall see below, we assign to spurious Ar ++ ions in the work of Blum et al and Nixon et al We also comment on the assignment of sputtered Mg excited states proposed by Blum et al .…”

“…Six peaks can be clearly resolved. The Ar spectra from Mg are similar to those from an AI rather than an Si target [4]: both the AI and Mg target spectra show two strong peaks, 2 and 3 in figure 4, and smaller peaks. However, the small peaks differ: in the case bf AI the clearly resolved peak 4 in figure 4 is a barely distinguishable shoulder and there are three smaller peaks in the energy range occupied by peaks 5 and 6 in figure 4.…”

“…A further difference is the presence of peak 1 in the data from Mg. This peak was very small or absent from the data from AI although it was strong in the Ar spectrum from an Si substrate, where many of the other small peaks could not be observed [4].…”
