“…Female rats also appear to be more sensitive than males to the behavioral activating effects of amphetamine (Becker, 1990, 1999; Forgie & Stewart, 1994), alcohol (Almeida, Shoaib, Deicke, Fischer, Darwish, & Patchev, 1998), cocaethylene (Sobel et al, 1998), cocaine (Sell, Scalzitti, Thomas, & Cunningham, 2000), and pentobarbital (Suzuki, Koike, Yoshi, & Yanaura, 1985), and recent evidence indicates that some of these sensitization effects may be estrogen dependent (Sell et al, 2000). The present results indicate greater sensitivity in females to the suppressant effects of ketoconazole, but only when behavior is elevated by food restriction.…”
