Objectives: to perform a comparative assessment of the nutritional care process in the prenatal and puerperium periods at a primary care unit in the city of Santos, SP, Brazil before and after the implantation of the Prenatal and Puerperium Nutritional Care Strategy. Methods: a cross-sectional study was composed of 58 pairs of women and their children, of whom, 30 underwent prenatal care before and 28 of them after the implantation by collecting data from perinatal registrations and children's charts. The care was evaluated by the official National guidelines. The chi-square test was used to compare variables between the pre and post intervention groups. Results: there was a significant improvement after the nutritional intervention, regarding to height (p=0.001), registration on pre-pregnancy weight (p=0.032), follow up on Body Mass Index/gestational week (p=0.001), registration on newborn’s weight at discharge (p=0.011) and daily weight gain at the first pediatric consultation (p=0.019). Conclusions: the Prenatal and Puerperal Nutritional Care Strategy contributed to improve maternal-child nutritional care and the data registration on patients’ charts, demonstrating the necessity to establish processes/flows and an integral care for this population.

“…Like the investigation carried out by the authors of the present study, Siqueira 27 investigated the prenatal care provided in another BCU in the city of Santos and found that of the 366 medical records evaluated only one had an updated BMI/gestational age curve, which was actually only partially updated. The author believes that this finding is due to the lack of nutritional status assessment and the health professionals' disregard for it, suggesting that they were not aware of the clinical value of this information.…”

The purpose of this study is to present a report of the experiences of the adoption of the Approach to Nutritional Care during Prenatal and Postpartum Periods, resulting from a partnership between the university and the municipal primary health care system of Santos, SP, Brazil. This approach was developed through joint work plans based on the need to incorporate nutritional care into the prenatal and postpartum care. All stages of design and implementation and the results of this strategy were documented in a field diary. This approach was adopted in two basic health units between 2010 and 2014. The stages of this process were planned in conjunction with health care teams and consisted of putting together interdisciplinary groups for nutrition education during the prenatal period. Interdisciplinary educational group meetings were held focusing on listening to the needs of pregnant women, the provision of prenatal nutritional care, and on the project to monitor the nutritional status of newborns through home visits up to the 15 days of postpartum. The interdisciplinary activities strengthened the bond between the users and the health care team members, contributing to the provision of effective care and promoting integrality. Home visiting contributed to encourage exclusive breastfeeding.

RESUMO Com este artigo objetivou-se visualizar, na produção científica nacional de teses e dissertações, como está organizado o processo de trabalho das enfermeiras na assistência pré-natal e quais são as dificuldades enfrentadas por essas trabalhadoras no desenvolvimento da assistência. A metodologia utilizada foi a revisão integrativa e a coleta de dados foi realizada na Biblioteca Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações, no mês de junho de 2011. Os descritores utilizados foram cuidado pré-natal e Enfermagem. Após a leitura dos textos foram selecionadas quatro teses e sete dissertações, das quais, posteriormente, tendo-se em vista a contemplação do objetivo do estudo, foram utilizadas três teses e quatro dissertações. Para análise dos dados foi realizada a análise temática e, após a leitura dos textos, a formulação de hipóteses, a exploração do material e a interpretação dos resultados, classificou-se o tema em duas categorias: "Estrutura organizacional do trabalho da enfermeira" e "Processo organizacional do trabalho da enfermeira". Com esta revisão integrativa foi possível concluir que as instituições de saúde ainda não estão preparadas estruturalmente para a realização do atendimento pré-natal, mas, mesmo assim, as enfermeiras a realizam nos espaços que lhe são disponíveis.
