Association Between Abdominal Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Normal-Weight Korean Women

Abstract: Our purpose in this study was to investigate the association of blood pressure (BP), triglyceride (TG), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), and fasting blood glucose (FG) levels with abdominal obesity in normal-weight Korean women grouped by age. Drawing from the 2001 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data set, we analyzed data from 3,427 adult women aged 20-79 years. Among normal-weight participants, 11.9% of women were identified as having abdominal obesity. Among those with normal weight … Show more

“…The inclusion criteria were women, aged ≥ 60, and waist circumference (WC) ≥ 85 cm. We included women, aged ≥ 60 since the previous study reported that those over 60 years old with abdominal obesity were more likely to have higher TG than those without [ 16 ] and the Korean national pension uses criteria for elderly as > 60 years old [ 17 ]. Subjects already diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM) or CVD were excluded since they may have difficulties in changing dietary behavior.…”

“…Matsuzawa (2010) destaca, em seu estudo, que o acúmulo de gordura visceral é considerado o principal fator de risco para doenças cardiovasculares e metabólicas. Um estudo realizado na Coreia do Sul destacou que a obesidade abdominal foi associada a doenças coronarianas e como um importante fator de risco cardiovascular mesmo entre as mulheres com peso corporal normal (KWON, 2009).…”

“…However, our data clearly demonstrate a positive linear association between %BF and TG and a negative association with HDL. These associations may have an important prognostic value, especially in younger populations, because recent data from the literature suggest that excess BF is much more frequently associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia later in life in young subjects than in subjects aged over 60 years [23]. In addition, we found that women with the highest adiposity had higher diastolic blood pressure compared with the thinnest women, and the incidence of elevated diastolic blood pressure ( !…”
