Biopharmaceutical Activities Related to Ellagic Acid, Chitosan, and Zein and Their Improvement by Association

Abstract: Ellagic acid (EA) has demonstrated several biological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzymatic inhibition. Zein and chitosan (CHI) are natural polymers whose biological potential has also gained attention. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticollagenase, and antielastase properties of EA, zein, and chitosan isolated or in combination. The microdilution method was used to assess the minimum inhibitory and bactericide concentrations. The antioxidant ac… Show more

“…The study by Tavares et al (2018) determined the antibacterial activity of chitosan, zein, and ellagic acid (separately and in combinations) against various bacterial pathogens. The EA showed the MIC and MBC values at 0.104 and 0.291 mg•mL −1 against S. aureus, respectively.…”

“…Ellagic acid (EA) is one such natural phenolic antioxidant, which exists in varieties of fruits and nuts, such as raspberry, grape, strawberry, pomegranate, and walnut 6 . Due to its polyphenolic characteristics, EA exhibits good medicinal properties, and the most widely reported and significant ones include potential antidiabetic, antioxidant, and anti‐inflammatory effects 7‐9 .…”
