“…Simultaneous measurement of metabolic heat rate, ϕ, and CO 2 production rate, R CO2 , by calorimetry is called calorespirometry and has previously been widely used to study metabolism in micro-organisms, animals and plants , but determination of the calorespirometric ratio, ϕ/R CO2 , has not previously been reported for basal metabolism in unamended soils. The ϕ/R CO2 ratio provides information on the redox state of substrates (Edelstein et al, 2001), on the metabolic pathways that are active (Mcfarlane et al, 2002), and is related to the efficiency of conversion of substrate carbon into living cells and the efficiency of conservation of available electrons in biosynthetic products (Acar et al, 2004).
