“…Similarly, there were significant differences in fertilization rates obtained with frozen semen that were thawed at different periods and temperatures. Similar results for the motility parameters of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were reported in some experiments (14,15,20). However, different results were determined in cryopreserved turbot sperm (9), where post-thaw motility was significantly lower than that of fresh sperm.…”

“…In the present study, fertilization rates were evaluated at a fixed ratio of 1x10 5 :1 spermatozoa:egg according to Magyary et al (21). It is reported that the concentration of post-thaw sperm used to achieve optimal fertilization success was approximately 100 times higher than that for fresh semen in Cyprinidae (20). Using our protocol with 1:100 000 of egg:spermatozoa ratio, higher fertilization rates were determined regardless of whether frozen or fresh semen was used.…”

“…The currently existing methods either produce unsatisfactory fertilization and hatching results (Moczarski, 1977;Kurokura et al, 1984;Cognie et al, 1989;Babiak et al, 1997) or they describe the fertilization of minute volumes of eggs: 200-800 eggs altogether (Lubzens et al, 1993;Linhart et al, 2000). They allow the utilization of cryopreservation in frozen gene banks, as it has been reported in Israel (Lubzens et al, 1997) and the Czech Republic (Linhart et al, 2000) but they are impractical for the hatchery practice as it involves the fertilization of large volumes of eggs at the same time.…”

“…The donor adults with oozing milt on mild pressing of abdomen were given hormonal inducement using WOVA-FH @ 0.5 ml kg -1 of body weight intramuscularly at the base of the dorsal fin during early hours of the day. Milt collection was done by gentle stripping as described by Kurokura et al (1984) and Lubzens et al (1997).…”
