CASE REPORT: Primary hepatic lymphoma associated with chronic liver disease

Abstract: We report on a case of primary hepatic lymphoma that developed in a patient with chronic hepatitis C. Given that Japan is an area endemic for both hepatitis B and C viruses, we reviewed 51 Japanese cases of primary hepatic lymphoma, addressing the question as to whether the Japanese cases have unique characteristics and whether there is a causal relationship to the presence of chronic liver disease. Primary hepatic lymphoma most commonly affected middle-aged males. Presenting symptoms and physical findings wer… Show more

“…In addition, NHL develops and grows in the liver primarily in some patients and is then called primary hepatic NHL. [13][14][15][16][17] Whether its involvement is primary or secondary, liver is not an uncommon target organ for NHL. AHF caused by hepatic involvement of NHL, however, is very rare.…”

“…[4][5][6][7] The patient with SS we have described here had no past history of liver disease. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is known to be one of the most frequent liver diseases associated with SS, with a reported incidence of 3%-9% in SS patients.…”

“…[1][2][3] According to previous reports, [4][5][6] PHL tends to coexist with chronic liver diseases, including viral hepatitis and cirrhosis, this being particularly notable in Japan. 7 In certain instances, PHL arises in patients with immune abnormalities, including those caused by systemic lupus erythematosus, 8 acquired immune deficiency syndrome, 4,9,10 or immunosuppressive treatment.…”

“…Only one of the three patients was immune-suppressed, and none presented with signs of chronic hepatopathy. Association of primary hepatic lymphoma with cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis has been described in 30% of cases (12)(13)(14)(15) . Although the reason for this association still remains unclear, the diagnosis of NHL should be considered in cirrhotic patients with voluminous hepatic mass and normal alphafetoprotein levels.…”
