CD44 Standard Isoform; Not a Good Marker for Colon Cancer

Abstract: Background: CD44 isoforms are known to be possible diagnostic and prognostic markers in colorectal cancer (CRC). Objectives: The present study aims at investigating the expression of CD44 standard (CD44s) isoform in CRC by immunohistochemistry (IHC) as well as exploring its clinicopathological correlations. Methods: A total of 102 patients, who underwent surgery for primary colorectal adenocarcinoma, were enrolled in this study. IHC staining for CD44 was performed on pathology samples and defined as: staining … Show more

“…Of these studies, 30 studies that evaluated the prognostic role of CD44 in CRC patients were in accordance with the inclusion criteria (2428, 34–57, 66). Thirty four studies reported the association of CD44 expression with clinicopathological features (24, 26, 27, 35, 3942, 44, 46, 47, 49, 52, 54, 57, 6784).…”

“…Our study did not show any significant correlation between CD44, DCLK1, and ANXA2 expression and clinicopathological features of colorectal cancer and OS. Recent studies have also demonstrated no significant association between CD44 and tumoral characteristics of CRC (Rohani et al 2017 ; Wang et al 2019 ). However, some studies have shown that CD44 overexpression has been correlated with worse OS of patients with CRC (Wang et al 2019 , 2017 ).…”

“…Overexpression of CD44 in colon cancer samples was found to negatively influence overall survival of colon cancer patients [33,34]; one study group found a negative association between CD44 expression and poor overall survival only for a specific variant of CD44 and, respectively, Cd44v2 [35]. The association between upregulation of CD44 in colon cancer and worse overall survival was not confirmed by other study groups [24,36], but the analysis was completed based on standard isoform of CD44 (CD44s). CD44 usage as an independent prognostic factor in colon cancer patients is not currently recommended [17], but further studies need to concentrate on specific isoforms, like the one abovementioned, in order to correctly identify its value as a prognostic marker.…”
