“…Although there are suitable preservation techniques and solutions for the liver and kidney, there remains a need for better methods to protect the heart for periods longer than 4 -5 h (9,10,32,39,50). More popular clinically used solutions include ViaSpan (22, 28, 51) (also called UW solution), HTK (histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate based, or Bretschneider solution) (16,41), Celsior (antioxidant-based solution with mannitol, reduced glutathione, plus high Mg 2ϩ , lactobionate, and glutamate) (5,17,20,33,34), and St. Thomas Hospital solution (STH; a high-K ϩ , high-Mg ϩ , low-Ca 2ϩ , lidocainecontaining solution) (4,8,21,25); others are Euro-Collins and Stanford solutions.…”

“…Although there are suitable long-term preservation techniques for the liver and kidney, hearts cannot be well protected for periods of more than 4 or 5 hours 1620. More popular experimentally tested and clinically used solutions include ViaSpan21–24 (also called UW solution), HTK (histidine–tryptophan–ketoglutarate-based solution, or Bretschneider’s),25,26 Celsior (anti-oxidant–based solution with mannitol, reduced glutathione, plus high Mg 2+ , lactobionate and glutamate)2731 and STH (St Thomas’ Hospital, a high K + , high Mg + , low Ca 2+ , lidocaine-containing solution)32–35; others include Euro-Collins and Stanford solutions. Most of these solutions have a “cardioplegic” (high [K + ]) base to arrest the heart.…”

“…For example, as an intracellular-type solution, Celsior solution has certain advantages for heart preservation. 3,4 In addition, the inclusion of an ATP-sensitive potassium channel opener, including adenosine, 5 pinacidil, 6 and diazoxide, into the preservation solution confers maximal protection to endothelial function of the coronary arteries 7 and overall heart preservation and maintenance of cardiac function. 8 Regarding the preservation technique, a simple low-temperature immersion method is still most commonly used in the clinical practice.…”
