Changes in activities of antioxidant enzymes and their gene expression during leaf development of sweetpotato

Abstract: To understand the functions of antioxidant enzymes during leaf development in sweetpotato, we investigated the activities of several antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT). Significant increases were observed in the activities of SOD, POX and APX during the late stage of leaf development, whereas CAT activity increased during the early developmental stage. By RT-PCR analysis, various POX and APX genes showed differential expressio… Show more

“…On the basis of our results, it can be suggested that severe warming stress is responsible for premature senescence as indicated by the increase of enzyme activities (Figure 4) and has caused irreversible inhibition of photosynthesis (Figure 3). Significant increases in the activities of APX during the late stage of leaf development have been already described in sweetpotato leaves [37]. In our case, the increase in APX and CAT activities may be also related to senescence.…”

“…In addition, the expression patterns of two ERF genes during plant development in leaves and fibrous roots were analyzed. The expression patterns of two ERF genes subjected to leaf development in sweetpotato were analyzed according to the methods of Kim et al (2009b). As shown in Fig.…”

“…Як правило, у рослин антиоксидантні ферменти кодуються мультигенними родинами. Залежно від стадії розвитку та за дії різних стресових чинників може експресуватись та чи інша ізоформа ферменту [1][2][3]. Крім того, вважається, що окремі ізоформи здатні (як мінімум частково) дублювати функції одна одну.…”
