Chitin-Based Double-Network Hydrogel as Potential Superficial Soft-Tissue-Repairing Materials

Abstract: Chitin is a biopolymer which has been proved to be a candidate as biomedical materials, yet the weak mechanical properties limited their potentials seriously. In this work, a chitin-based doublenetwork (DN) hydrogel was designed as a potential superficial repairing material. The hydrogel was synthesized through double-network (DN) strategy composing hybrid regenerated chitin nanofibers (RCNs)-poly (ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) (PEGDE) as the first network and polyacrylamide (PAAm) as the second network. T… Show more

“…The PAA/0.25NCT hydrogel displayed two peaks at 1696 and 1613 cm –1 , which indicated the metal-coordination interactions between the carboxyl groups and Al 3+ bonds. Moreover, the peaks centered around 3100 cm –1 indicated the presence of the hydrogen bonds between PAA and chitin . The peaks located at 1030 and 1070 cm –1 in the FTIR spectra of PAA/0.25NCT were ascribed to the C–O stretching vibration of the chitin skeleton, indicating the presence of chitin nanofibers in the composite hydrogel (shown in Figure S4).…”

“…Similarly, Zheng et al synthesized a PAA/CNF/graphene nanocomposite hydrogel with physical and chemical cross-linking networks, which demonstrated a tensile strength of 320 kPa and a self-healing efficiency of 96.7% within 12 h . Recently, Huang et al also used the dual-network strategy to synthesize a hybrid chitin-poly(ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether)/polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel possessing a fracture stress of 0.499 MPa as soft tissue repairing materials …”

“…Chitin and its derivatives (chitosan) are widespread and inexpensive biological materials isolated from the cell walls of fungi (Mucoraceae), insect exoskeletons, and invertebrate skeletons [101]. Chitin was first discovered by Professor Henri Braconnot in 1881 [102].…”

“…Many biopolymers with a biodegradable nature can perform as described previously such as PCL, chitin, silk fibroin, and PLA [183][184][185][186][187]. However, the use of chitosan for controlled drug delivery has been of great interest in nanomedicine research [188].…”
