Circadian rhythms in human salivary flow rate and composition

Abstract: SUMMARY1. Unstimulated whole saliva and parotid saliva stimulated at a constant flow rate of 1-0 ml./min were collected from eight subjects at about 07.00, 11.00, 14.00, 17.00 and 22.00 hr and oral temperature was recorded several times daily for time spans of between 4 and 26 days. A leastsquares cosine wave was fitted to the data to test for the presence and characteristics of circadian rhythms. 2. Estimates of mean level, amplitude, acrophase and period were obtained for different components and the results… Show more

“…It is therefore of greater significance to establish Whether or not the flow rate has changed adversely in a particular individual. 10 Reduced salivary flow is due to hypofunction of the salivary glands. This may be reversible, due to anxiety, acute infection, dehydration or the effects of some drugs.…”

“…Salivary flow rates could vary in relation to circadian cycle, individual hydration, food stimulation, oral hygiene, etc. [8]. Normalization to total proteins is used as alternative to salivary flow to look for differences in the ratio of biochemical analytes present in saliva [12,26].…”

“…Of course, the gastric and esophageal mucosas protection mechanisms play a decisive role in the capacity these organs have to withstand daily mechanical and chemical aggressions, and many of these mechanisms are saliva mediated [31][32][45][46][47][48] . Saliva has many organic and inorganic substances that contribute to the protection against physical and chemical aggression and also to maintain mucosal integrity, not only of the oral cavity, but also of the digestive tract 43,45,46,[48][49][50][51][52] . We then set sail, based on the following assumptions:…”
