Composition and physicochemical properties of calcium silicate based sealers: A review article

Abstract: BackgroundRecently a new generation of endodontic sealers has been developed based on calcium silicate as MTA Fillapex, Endoseal MTA, Total Fill BC Sealer, EndoSequence BC Sealer, iRoot SP, Endo CPM sealer, MTA-Angelus and ProRoot Endo Sealer. A review of literature was conducted to discuss the composition, physicochemical properties, and clinical perspectives of calcium silicate based sealers.Material and MethodsA literature search was conducted in PubMed and web of knowledge databases with appropriate MeSh t… Show more

“…Moreover, the existence of voids inside the sealers can affect the filling quality (Huang et al 2017). Although calcium silicate-based sealers have suitable physical properties, they have been reported to have high solubility when immersed in distilled water (Jafari & Jafari 2017, Urban et al 2018). However, the use of simulated body fluids for immersion provides greater similarity to clinical application (Grech et al 2013).…”

“…The setting time of experimental medicaments was consistent between groups. The three experimental medicaments that mixed with 2% CHX gel did not set until the end of the testing period (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,14,28,60, and 84 days).…”

“…More recently, it has been used as a root canal sealer and for treatment of dentine hypersensitivity. [4][5][6] Additionally, MTA has been proposed to be used to stimulate a dentinogenic process in human pulp capping 7 and obturation of retained primary teeth. 8 Furthermore, CSC has an antibacterial activity due to the release of hydroxide ions (OH−) by calcium silicate that triggers a rise in pH values.…”
