Computing Architectural Vulnerability Factors for Address-Based Structures

Abstract: Processor designers require estimates of the architectural vulnerability factor (AVF) of on-chip structures to make accurate soft error rate estimates. AVF is the fraction of faults from alpha particle and neutron strikes that result in user-visible errors. This paper shows how to use a performance model to calculate the AVF of address-based structures, using a data cache, a data translation buffer, and a store buffer as examples. We describe how to perform a detailed breakdown of lifetime components (e.g., fi… Show more

“…The irradiation impact is reduced when the benchmarks are executed with a deactivated cache (mapping utility knob of the 68882 coprocessor). Similarly, in Biswas et al [2005], we see different AVF values for the considered benchmark applications. A paper that deals with the impact of ported SW on reliability metrics is Kim et al [2011].…”

“…Biswas et al [35] present lifetime analysis approach for computing AVF of address-based structures, such as data cache, data translation buffer and store buffer. Whether a bit in the cache is ACE depends on the sequence of accesses to the cache.…”

“…In order to estimate each cache unit SER, its Architectural Vulnerability Factor (AVF) is computed according to the life time analysis method presented in [50] and multiplied with the intrinsic alpha and neutron-induced FIT rates of a 65 nm technology SRAM cell working in terrestrial environment. The FIT rate is obtained from an industrial soft error analysis tool [51].…”
