Control of Thousand-Grain Weight by OsMADS56 in Rice

Abstract: Grain weight and size are important traits determining grain yield and influencing grain quality in rice. In a previous study, a quantitative trait locus controlling thousand-grain weight (TGW) in rice, qTGW10-20.8, was mapped in a 70.7 kb region on chromosome 10. Validation of the candidate gene for qTGW10-20.8, OsMADS56 encoding a MADS-box transcription factor, was performed in this study. In a near-isogenic line (NIL) population segregated only at the OsMADS56 locus, NILs carrying the OsMADS56 allele of IRB… Show more

“…Most important agronomic traits are controlled by a few major QTLs and many minor QTLs. Only a small number of genes underlying minor QTLs have been isolated in rice [ 5 , 13 , 23 , 48 , 49 ]. In our previous study, minor QTL qGS1-35.2 was fine-mapped using NIL populations derived from a cross between ZS97 and MY46.…”

“…Overexpression and knockout/knockdown of a same gene usually causes opposite effects [ 10 , 11 , 13 , 15 , 17 , 20 , 23 , 25 , 27 , 28 , 31 , 34 ]. However, we surprisingly discovered that overexpressing and knockout OsPUB3 MY46 both decreased GW.…”

“…Grain weight is an important component trait for increased yield. Zuo et al [ 6 ] validated a candidate gene, OsMADS56, encoding a MADS-box transcription factor. This was identified as the most important candidate gene in the grain weight QTL qTGW10-20.8 region in an earlier study.…”

“…Followed are three genes on two chromosomes, including GW2 (Song et al 2007 ), GS2 / GL2 / GLW2 (Hu et al 2015 ; Che et al 2016 ; Li et al 2016 ) and TGW2 (Ruan et al 2020 ) on chromosome 2, and GS5 (Li et al 2011 ), GW5 / GSE5 (Duan et al 2017 ; Liu et al 2017 ) and qGL5 (Qiao et al 2021 ) on chromosome 5. Then are two genes on two chromosomes, including GLW7 (Si et al 2016 ) and GL7 / GW7 (Wang et al 2015a , 2015b ) on chromosome 7, and GW10 (Zhan et al 2021 ) and GL10 / OsMADS56 (Zhan et al 2022 ; Zuo et al 2022 ) on chromosome 10. The remaining three are qTGW1.2b (Chan et al 2021 ), GW8 (Wang et al 2012 ) and GS9 (Zhao et al 2018 ) on chromosomes 1, 8 and 9, respectively.…”
