“…A technology solution of great interest -one that would allow increased use of the transmission system -relies on the use of FACTS devices (Flexible AC Transmission System), which allow system operators greater control over the flow on power lines. Some existing installations of FACTS devices, that have demonstrated many of the anticipated benefits associated with improved transmission control, include a STATCOM at the Sullivan substation in the TVA territory, a UPFC at AEP's Inez substation, a CSC (convertible static compensator) at the Marcy substation in New York, and a STATCOM at San Diego Gas & Electric's Talega substation [6,7,13,14,15,19]. The research project discussed here investigates the possible future use of FACTS devices that includes tighter integration of these devices into the automatic control of the power system and electricity market operation.…”
