Convertible static compensator project-hardware overview

Abstract: EPRI SummaryThe development and implementation of a f 200 MVA Convertible Static Compensator (CSC), the latest generation of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) technology, will help relieve transmission line congestion in Central New York State. The CSC, a power-electronics control device based on voltage source inverter technology, is part of a transmission system reinforcement project employing a combination of FACTS and conventional technologies. The CSC is being installed at NYPA's Marcy 345-kV substat… Show more

“…Six of these GTO modules are connected in series to constitute a single GTO valve, and four such valves are mounted symmetrically on a horizontal beam structure to make a pole. A redundant module is included in each valve so that the valve can continue to operate safely under contingency conditions with one failed module in each valve [7]. Fig.…”

“…A technology solution of great interest -one that would allow increased use of the transmission system -relies on the use of FACTS devices (Flexible AC Transmission System), which allow system operators greater control over the flow on power lines. Some existing installations of FACTS devices, that have demonstrated many of the anticipated benefits associated with improved transmission control, include a STATCOM at the Sullivan substation in the TVA territory, a UPFC at AEP's Inez substation, a CSC (convertible static compensator) at the Marcy substation in New York, and a STATCOM at San Diego Gas & Electric's Talega substation [6,7,13,14,15,19]. The research project discussed here investigates the possible future use of FACTS devices that includes tighter integration of these devices into the automatic control of the power system and electricity market operation.…”

“…It can be anticipated that the IPFC may be used to solve the complex transmission network congestion management problems that transmission companies are now facing in the transmission open-access environment. This is the case of the convertible static compensator (CSC) installed at the Marcy Substation of the New York Power Authority (NYPA) as party of project that will increase power transfer capability and maximize the use of the existing transmission network [8], [9]. Manuscript Power flow calculations are performed frequently in power system operation, planning, and control.…”
