The century-old zinc-air (Zn-air) battery concept has been revived in the last decade due to its high theoretical energy density, environmental-friendliness, affordability, and safety. Particularly, electrically rechargeable Zn-air battery technologies are of great importance for bulk applications like electric vehicles, grid management, and portable electronic devices. Nevertheless, Zn-air batteries are still not competitive enough to realize widespread practical adoption because of issues in efficiency, durability, and cycle life. Here, following an introduction to the fundamentals and performance testing techniques, the latest research progress related to electrically rechargeable Zn-air batteries is compiled, particularly new key findings in the last five years (2013-2018). The strategies concerning the development of Zn and air electrodes are in focus. The design of other battery components, namely electrolytes and separators are also discussed. Poor performance of O electrocatalysts and the lack of the long-term stability of Zn electrodes and electrolytes remain major challenges. Finally, recommendations regarding the testing routines and materials design are provided. It is hoped that this up-to-date account will help to shape the future research activities toward the development of practical electrically rechargeable Zn-air batteries with extended lifetime and superior performance.

energy density, impressive flexibility and excellent waterproof ability (fully immersed and charged/discharged under the water more than 33hrs for 3000 cycles with the capacity retention of approximately 80%). Combined with first principle theory calculation, the reversible electrochemical mechanisms of the FARZBs with one-step redox processes of Co 3 O 4 /CoOOH without obvious zinc dendrite deposits and structural change of Co 3 O 4 nanowires have been confirmed by cyclic voltammetry, in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ Raman and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. These results demonstrate that the FARZBs are promising power sources for emerging wearable electronics.

Rechargeable aqueous batteries are one of the most promising large-scale energy storage devices because of their environment-friendly properties and high safety advantages without using flammable and poisonous organic liquid electrolyte. In addition, rechargeable Zn-MnO 2 batteries have great potential due to their low-cost resources as well as high energy density. However, dendritic growth of the zinc anode hinders the exertion of cycling stability and rate capacity in an aqueous Zn-MnO 2 battery system.Here we use an electrochemical deposition method to in situ form a three-dimensional (3D) zinc anode on carbon fibers (CFs). This 3D Zn@CFs framework has lower charge transfer resistance with larger electroactive areas. Batteries based on the 3D zinc framework anode and a-MnO 2 nanowire cathode present enhanced rate capacity and long cycling stability, which is promising for utilization in other zinc anode based aqueous batteries as an effective way to solve dendrite formation.
