Delay‐incorporating observability and predictability analysis of safety‐critical continuous‐time systems

Abstract: The authors suggest a framework for human-automation interaction in safety-critical continuous systems under shared control and consider continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamics to formalise our physical models mathematically. Their goal is to determine whether or not a given user-interface provides the information required for a certain task, under the assumption that the user does not have access to any information beyond what is provided in the display. They identify observability-based conditio… Show more

“…Eskandari et al [158] studied human perception characteristics and limitations when interacting with a machine, describing them in terms of the observability and predictability of the human-machine control system. In doing so, the user was modeled as a function able to map the information obtained from the controlled part (through a display) into its control input.…”

“…Compared with a typical full-order or reduced-order observer, the main advantages of a functional observer lie in that it enables us acquiring observers of lower order and brings more degrees of freedom in the observer structure, as well as relaxes the observability/detectability requirements of the system to less conservative conditions [1], [2], [5]. Functional observers have a wide range of applications in different areas such as system monitoring, observer-based control, and fault diagnosis of linear or nonlinear dynamic systems [6], [8]- [11].…”
