OBJECTIVE:To estimate the socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors associated with the daily intake of five servings of fruit and vegetables by elderly individuals living in low income areas, identifying the main fruits and vegetables which compose the diet of this population.METHODS: This is a cross-sectional population-based study with 2,066 low income elderly individuals (≥60 years) living in the city of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2003. To assess the fruit and vegetable intake a Food Frequency Questionnaire was administered. The answers were transformed into daily intake and compared with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (five or more servings per day). The relationship between recommended fruit and vegetable intake and socioeconomic variables was analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS:Of the participants, 60.5% were women and 39.5% were men. Approximately one third of the elders (n=723; 35.0%) did not consume any kind of fruit or vegetable on a daily basis and 19.8% reported a daily intake of five or more servings of fruits and vegetables. This intake was positively associated with income and years of schooling.

Devido ao crescente interesse sobre a possível relação entre a alimentação de crianças e adolescentes e doenças na idade adulta, a dieta de indivíduos jovens tem sido pesquisada. Este trabalho teve por objetivo desenvolver um questionário de freqüência alimentar para avaliar a dieta habitual de crianças de 2 a 5 anos de idade (QFAC). Foram identificados os alimentos mais representativos para o consumo de energia - carboidrato, proteína, lipídio, retinol, vitamina C, cálcio e ferro - a partir de recordatórios de 24h de crianças de 2 a 5 anos do município de São Paulo. No QFAC foram definidas porções médias ou medianas, o tempo precedente foi estipulado em 6 meses e a freqüência de consumo apresentada em 7 categorias. O QFAC apresentou-se como um instrumento adequado para a avaliação da dieta habitual de crianças de 2 a 5 anos de idade, possibilitando a investigação das características da alimentação habitual deste grupo e o estabelecimento das possíveis relações entre a dieta e o estado nutricional.

The article describes the relative frequency ok of risk and protective behaviors for chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in adults residing in Viçosa, Brazil. A cross-section-al population-based study including 1,226 adults living in the municipality. We used a structured questionnaire containing questions sociodemographic and behavioral The risk and protection factors evaluated were: smoking, physical activity, excessive consumption of alcohol and food consumption. The proportion of risk and protection factors was calculated in the total population, according to gender, education and socioeconomic status. The studied population has a high frequency of risk factors for NCDs, such as excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, habit of consuming whole milk, habit of eating meat with visible fat, regular consumption of soft drinks and 78.5% did not achieve the minimum recommendation for physical activity in leisure time. With regard to protective factors, 86.2% of the population reported regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, and 73%, of beans. It was found the highest frequency of risk factors in among males, in younger people and middle socioeconomic status. This population has an urgent need for public policy of municipal planning to change this current scenario.
