Design and fabrication of miniature compliant hinges for multi-material compliant mechanisms

Abstract: Multi-material molding (MMM) enables the creation of multi-material mechanisms that combine compliant hinges, serving as revolute joints, and rigid links in a single part. There are three important challenges in creating these structures: (1) bonding between the materials used, (2) the ability of the hinge to transfer the required loads in the mechanism while allowing for the prescribed degree(s) of freedom, and (3) incorporating the process-specific requirements in the design stage. This paper presents the ap… Show more

“…Several authors have also investigated the use of multimaterial molding (MMM) for the creation of multiple material compliant mechanisms [38][39][40]. MMM is a process whereby the various materials in the final part are created volumetrically, as opposed to the layer-by-layer methods of both AM and SDM.…”

“…They generate smooth and continuous displacement without backlash. So flexure joints are usually used to compose the structure of micro-/nanoequipment named as compliant mechanisms [1,2]. However, compliant mechanisms cannot finish spatial multidimensional motion characteristics.…”
