Development of Corn Starch-Neusilin UFL2 Conjugate as Tablet Superdisintegrant: Formulation and Evaluation of Fast Disintegrating Tablets

Abstract: In the present study, corn Starch-Neusilin UFL2 conjugates were prepared by physical, chemical, and microwave methods with the aim of using the conjugates as tablet superdisintegrant. Various powder tests, namely, angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, Hausner's ratio, Carr's index, swelling index, and powder porosity were conducted on the samples. The conjugates were characterized by ATR-FTIR, XRD, DSC, and SEM techniques. Heckel and Kawakita models were applied to carry out compression studies for th… Show more

“…The attenuation of melting point of the composites is technologically advantageous because it will enhance their processibility (compactibility, plasticity). [ 37 38 ] An anomalous behavior in the peak melting point of the coprocessed excipients and the physical mixtures is evident as a higher proportion of starch gave rise to the elevation of peak melting points and the depression of heats of fusions [ Table 2 ]. This may be linked to the alteration of the crystallinity of the blends caused by interaction between the -OH group of CS and the amide N-H group of PT, thereby leading to cross-linking.…”

“…Goel et al 2009 investigated Chitosan Glycine mixture to possess tablet superdisintegrant properties and prepared and evaluated oral dispersible tablets of ondansetron employing these conjugates [9]. Starch-Neusilin [4], Starch-Metal silicate [10], Starch-Silicone dioxide [11] have been prepared, evaluated and established as tablet superdisintegrant by our research group. The interaction of glycine with starch to form conjugates was conducted with an aim to enhance the wicking ability which further increases the tablet disintegration property of the biopolymer for being used in the development of fast disintegrating tablets.…”

“…Various physical and chemical modifications of starches have been reported for improving the compaction and disintegration properties. Modification of starch like conjugation with Neusilin UFL2 [4], magnesium silicate [5], carboxymethlylation of sago and pea starch exhibited improvement in superdisintegration potential compared to the native starches [6].…”
