Diatom species composition of the Nisava river and its tributaries Jerma and Temska rivers (southern Serbia)

Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to report the diatom taxa identified from the Nisava River and its tributaries, the Jerma and Temska rivers. The study area included 11 sampling sites along the Nisava River, with one site on the Jerma River and one on the Temska River. Monthly samples (from stones, sediments and macrophytes) were collected from May 2008 to May 2009. Diatom frustules were cleaned with chemical agents, and mounted on permanent slides. In total, 194 diatom taxa were identifie… Show more

“…High species richness was recorded within the genera Nitzschia (18), Navicula (9), and Gomphonema (7), as found in studies of Andrejic et al (2012), Delgado et al (2013), and Suphan et al (2012). These are very common genera with large numbers of species (Fourtanier and Kociolek, 2009;Spaulding et al, 2010).…”

“…The species recorded in the Lasovačka and Lenovačka streams are widely distributed in freshwater ecosystems [15]. The most numerous taxa of Gomphonema and Navicula are common in streams of Europe and Serbia [3,19]. During the study, C. budensis was recorded in the Lasovačka River, and in the diatom flora of Serbia for the first time [20].…”

“…The first diatom data in Serbia date from 1883 [16]. However, it was only in the second half of the 20 th century that extensive research into diatoms began [17][18][19][20][21], and in the last twenty years the number of new recorded diatom taxa for Serbian flora has increased [20][21][22][23][24]. The aim of this paper was to report new records of diatom taxa from different sites throughout Serbia in order to supplement the diatom checklist.…”
