Digital Storytelling as a Tool in Education

Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to discuss digital storytelling in the context of education. Two questions guide the study: What is a digital story? What is the motivation for making a digital story? I have examined short multimodal personally-told digital stories published on the Internet. As a theoretical framework for the discussion I have compared digital storytelling with storytelling traditions in the oral and the written culture. The result implies that the definition of a digital story depends on what is co… Show more

“…Robin (2006) discusses three sub-genres of learner-generated digital storytelling, namely: personal narratives (the main type used in our study), historical documentaries and stories that inform or instruct. Nilsson (2008) uses a similar taxonomy of digital storytelling tasks, describing four 'sub-genres': descriptive (usually personal) stories, argumentative (or advocacy) stories, dramatic and poetic stories.…”

“…Wang and Zhan (2010) state that digital stories affect and support learning. In some studies, it has been emphasized that digital stories are an instructional tool and it is stated as "an effective teaching tool for teachers" or "an effective learning tool for students" (Clarke & Adam, 2012;Nilsson, 2008;Robin, 2006). Also, Robin (2008) stated that teachers have the option of showing previously-created digital stories to their students to introduce content and capture students' attention when presenting new ideas.…”
