The successful management of complex systems is one of the classical key challenges of Informatics. Since various intelligent systems are increasingly interconnected, new adequate system architectures and methods are required supporting a highly automated, autonomous system management as well as providing interfaces for control actions by human users in order to allow a reasonable response to changing requirements and unexpected environmental operating conditions. The vision of Organic Computing postulates the desired adaptive behaviour of these systems. Even if some system concepts of Organic Computing have already been developed and successfully tested in specific application scenarios, the widespread provision of organic computer systems will remain a fascinating challenge for research.
