A strategy that has the potential to contribute to the achievement of the targets established under SDG 8 (“Decent Work and Economic Growth”) involves the development of sustainable tourism to create productive job and livelihood opportunities and to promote local culture and products. In the province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, ikat weaving is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the region, with ikat characterized by unique design motives and the use of natural dyes. Unfortunately, in some areas, the use of natural dyes is diminishing as a result of competition with synthetic dyes and the limited availability of raw materials, particularly for the production of blue dye. The development of Indigofera spp. to produce natural, plant-based blue dye has significant potential to contribute to community incomes and employment. This study outlines a strategy for developing the use of Indigofera spp. as a natural dye and describes its potential for contributing to community incomes, especially on Timor Island, NTT. The study shows that weavers currently use indigo plants that grow naturally in gardens and yards. Although the community has a tradition of using these plants, informed by local wisdom, to develop the cultivation and processing of this plant through the application of the appropriate techniques, including innovative approaches to producing indigo paste, could enable the development of Indigofera spp. cultivation on a larger scale. The study shows that the availability of suitable land is high (±370 thousand ha), with 80% of the suitable land being categorized as critical. The study proposes a development based on the analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to assess the manner in which these opportunities could be leveraged with the support and participation of local communities and other stakeholders by leveraging the culture and wisdom of the community regarding the use of Indigofera spp.

Tannins from tamarind seed husk were extracted and applied as a biomordant for natural dyeing process of Timor woven fabrics. Tannins were extracted using hot distilled water, qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed and applied as a color binder to the woven fabrics. The color characteristics of woven fabrics with tannins were compared to the woven fabrics that mordanted with Al2(SO4)3 and FeSO4 at the concentration of 15%. Tamarind seed husk tannins are in the form of a brownish red powder. Qualitative and quantitative tests showed that tamarind seed coat contained condensed tannins with a total concentration of 70.08 ± 0.14%. Tannins identification by FT-IR spectroscopy showed a strong band absorption at 3369 cm-1 for O-H group and a weak absorption at 1721 cm-1 due to the C=O stretch. A strong absorption at 1611-1608 cm-1 was observed for C=C group in the aromatic ring and was strengthened with a strong absorption at 1520 cm-1, C-O-C group which is specific for condensed tannins was observed at 1285 cm-1. Application of 15% tannin as a biomordant without natural dye on Timor woven fabric produced a brownish red color, while the use of 15% tannin and turmeric dye showed a brownish yellow color. Tannin exhibited a better color fastness than metalic mordants in natural dyeing of Timor woven fabrics.

Kain tenun endek merupakan kerajinan tradisonal masyarakat Bali yang berfungsi sebagai sumber budaya (cultural resource) berbentuk barang/cendera mata (goods) yang apabila dikemas dengan baik dapat menjadi suatu komoditi dengan peluang pasar yang besar dalam industri kreatif dan pariwisata. Namun, kain tenun endek dari Karangasem saat ini kalah bersaing dengan tenun dari luar Bali. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan upaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas dalam hal ragam hias dan produk kreatif. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengembangkan ragam hias tenun endek Karangasem dan produk jadinya sesuai dengan selera pasar. Metode penelitian yang dilakukan adalah eksplorasi desain dengan mengambil objek wisata dan flora yang ada di Karangasem, penyajian secara visual, pembuatan contoh produk cendera mata, dan penilaian ahli. Hasil penelitian ini menghasilkan tiga motif baru yaitu motif Rumah Pohon, motif Tirta Gangga, dan motif Bunga Lotus. Desain dan contoh produk kemudian dinilai menggunakan expert judgement melalui kuesioner sebanyak 36 responden yang terdiri dari desainer dan masyarakat Bali. Variabel yang dinilai adalah harmoni, proporsi, keseimbangan dan kelayakan jual. Hasil indeks menunjukkan nilai rata -rata paling tinggi adalah motif Tirta Gangga dengan nilai 83,02%. Berdasarkan penilaian dengan expert judgement, motif baru yang dibuat telah memenuhi kaidah desain dan layak untuk dijual.
