Dyeing Properties of Natural Dyes Extracted from Turmeric and their Comparison with Reactive Dyeing

Abstract: A natural dye is extracted from turmeric and used to dye cotton at different dyeing conditions. Then the fastness properties of the dyeings with different dyeing techniques are compared. The dye is found to have good saturation and rubbing fastness, but poor washing and light fastness properties on cotton, when applied without any mordant. When dyeing is implemented with mordants, washing and light fastness properties show improvement while rubbing fastness exhibits deterioration. Finally, comparative studies … Show more

“…Pre-heated soap solution (at 60ºC) in the ratio of 1:50 i.e., 0.5g/25 mL was taken in stainless steel glass and fabric was sandwiched and rotated at 60ºC for 30 min in an H-T dyeing machine. The specimen was removed, rinsed in cold and hot water, dried, assessed in its change in color, and rubbing fastness was estimated [19]. Rubbing fastness was analyzed using the ISO 105 x-12 method using a Crockmeter.…”

“…[199][200][201][202][203][204][205][206][207][208] does not contain nitrogen within its structure and for the purpose of dyeing with natural dyes needs to be mordanted. Pre-and post-mordanting with iron and aluminium improves the light fastness and washing fastness of turmeric dye on cotton [12]. In previous studies of dyeing textiles with turmeric dye, mordants were applied onto textiles mostly before dyeing (pre-mordanting) and at high concentrations.…”
