Effect of alkaline pretreatment on delignification of wheat straw

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse structural changes through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) after alkaline pretreatment of wheat straw for optimum steaming period. During the study, 2 mm size of substrate was soaked in 2.5% NaOH for 1 h at room temperature and then autoclaved at 121°C for various steaming time (30, 60, 90 and 120 min). Results revealed that residence time of 90 min at 121°C has strong effect on substrate, achieving a maximum cellulose content of 83%,… Show more

“…The mechanical pretreatment of dried KG was done first with a chopper to get one-inch small pieces and then crushed with the laboratory scale Hammer-Beater Mill using 3 mm screen to achieve equal size particles. Chemical pretreatment of substrate was performed with slight modification of method as described by Asgher et al [20]. Chemical pretreatment was conducted overnight by soaking KG (100 g) in 0.625M NaOH solution followed by steam treatment at 1218C for 1 h. The substrate was washed with tap water for 2-3 time to remove excess salts and until the neutral pH was achieved followed by its drying to constant weight at 1058C.…”

“…Thus, alkali pretreatment is considered as one of the promising pretreatment technologies. However, there were also some issues of alkali pretreatment: (1) Typically, about 30% of hemicelluloses were degraded and dissolved in spent liquor during conventional alkali pretreatment, leading to some waste of fermentable sugars (Asghar et al, 2015;Zhang et al, 2014a,b). (2) The efficiency of enzymatic saccharification achieved by conventional alkali pretreatment was limited.…”

“…Moreover, by considering all these factors, wheat straw can be considered as biomaterial for many domestic and industrial applications. e amount of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in wheat straw is 33-45%, 19-32%, and 8-16%, respectively [3]. Owing to the amount of cellulose content wheat straw contains, it can be used to isolate cellulose from noncellulosic components (hemicellulose and lignin).…”
