Effect of Cyclosporine a on the Hearing Loss in Behçet's Disease

Abstract: Thirty-five patients with Behçet's disease (20 under cyclosporine A [CyA] treatment and 15 under the conventional therapy), 12 patients suffering from endogenous uveitis, and 35 normal subjects were evaluated audiologically before entering the study and were followed up for at least a year. Twenty-eight Behçet patients (80%) showed some degree of hearing loss. The averaged pure tone audiogram of the Behçet group showed statistically significant auditory deficits in comparison with that of the control group. No… Show more

“…[25][26][27] These ndings support the hypothesis of an immunologically mediated vasculitis in Behçet's syndrome. Improvement of hearing impairment in patients with this condition, in response to immunomodulatory therapy has been reported, 28,29 and this provides additional evidence that the inner ear lesions are immunologically mediated.…”

“…In Behçet's disease, the rate of hearing loss ranges from 12 to 80% in different studies [9,10,[32][33][34] . However, the reports on inner ear involvement in Behçet's disease are contradictory.…”

“…Sudden hearing loss and fluctuating hearing loss were also reported in Behçet's disease [7,8] . Hearing loss in Behçet's disease can be attributed to vasculitis or inflammatory-autoimmune factors [8][9][10] .…”

“…Behçet's syndrome is known to be associated with an increased incidence of SNHL and treatment with ciclosporin has been proven to improve hearing in up to 25% of patients [12]. This conflicts with two case reports [13,14] in which ciclosporin was cited as a causal factor in SNHL; however, both of these involved renal transplant patients.…”
