Effect of dermal application of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) on male reproductive system of rat

Abstract: 1 The toxic manifestations of dermally applied hexa chlorocyclohexane (50 mg or 100 mg kg-1 body weight day -1, 5 days in a week for 120 days) on testes and sperm of rat have been investigated. 2 The results indicate that exposure of HCH through the dermal route could lead to an alteration in the activities of marker testicular enzymes viz. sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), glucose-6-P-dehydrogenase (G6PDH), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) and β… Show more

“…Studies show that organic chlorine compounds have an inhibitory effect on the testicular hormones in male rats (Lindenau et al 1994;Prasad et al 1995;Walsh and Stocco 2000). Testosterone is the principal hormone ensuring normal spermatogenesis and inhibition of germ cell apoptosis (Dohle et al 2003).…”

“…In male rats, chronic lindane exposures markedly reduce sperm counts, sperm motility and impair spermatogenesis. In addition, serum testosterone concentrations decrease in lindane intoxication (Chowdhury and Gautam 1994;Prasad et al 1995;Dalsenter et al 1996;Kuriyama 2005).…”

“…HCHs were classified as contaminants of concern because of their recalcitrant, bioaccumulative and toxic properties (Prasad et al, 1995;Magnusson et al, 1996;Möller et al, 1996;Hargrave et al, 2000;Macdonald et al, 2000). HCHs were released into the environment in two main formulations: technical HCH (α isomer 60-70%, β isomer 5-12%, γ isomer 10-15%) and lindane (pure γ isomer).…”

“…As a result, risk assessment of carcinogen chemicals became an important issue of public health policy (16). There is evidence that widely used carcinogens such as Lindane (g-hexachlorocyclohexane) concentrate in fat tissues and testis (17). There, their toxicities persist for years and are able to promote genital malformations, decreased fertility, and several cancers in exposed rodents (18,19).…”
