Effect of kaolin waste annealing on the structural and thermal behavior of poly(ε−caprolactone)

Abstract: The heat treatment effect on kaolin waste from mining was evaluated on the structural and thermal behavior of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). The PCL/KW (kaolin waste) and PCL/HTKW (heat-treated kaolin waste) composites were processed in an internal mixer and subsequently characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kaolin waste showed kaolinite and quartz in its composition, while the heat treatment at 1200°C modified it to mullite, quartz and silica-rich amorphous pha… Show more

“…Figure 15 a,b shows the relative crystallinity and crystallization rate of pure PA6 and blends, respectively. The relative crystallinity curves of pure PA6 and its blends had a sigmoidal shape, suggesting phase transformation [ 60 , 61 ]. Compared with other formulations, the crystallization process started at higher temperatures for pure PA6 and PA6/ABS (10%) blend.…”

“…The phase transition events (melting and crystallization) obtained by DSC were analyzed using the INTEGRAL software, as described in the literature. [45,46] The conversion into melt fraction and crystallized fraction was made using the expression: J corresponds to the heat flow required during the phase transition event, while J 0 represents the virtual baseline. Moreover,…”

“…17 However, PCL has limitations such as low stiffness, low thermomechanical strength and low crystallization temperature. 18,19 An alternative to improve these drawbacks is through the PCL reinforcement with vegetable fibers, 20 producing ecological biocomposites and contributing to expand its application range.…”
