Effect ofVitex negundo leaf extract on the free radicals scavengers in complete Freund's adjuvant induced arthritic rats

Abstract: The effect of the oral administration ofVitex negundo leaf extract on the levels of enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants were studied in the adjuvant induced arthritic (AIA) rats The levels of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, GPx, G6PD, GSH and Vit-C were estimated in various groups of the experimental rats. It was observed that the antioxidant enzyme levels in the AIA were significantly low when compared to normal rats. A significant decrease in enzymic antioxidant-SOD, CAT, GPx, G6PD and non-enzymic ant… Show more

“…CAT, localized in peroxisomes or microperoxisomes (Devi et al 2007) cleaves hydrogen peroxide generated in the body to water and oxygen, and thus, protects the cell from oxidative damage. Increase in CAT activity in liver, kidney and spleen when administered with MEFP again exhibits its protective effect against oxygen-derived free radicals.…”

“…4 All parts of the plant from root to fruit possess a multitude of phytochemical secondary metabolites which impart an unprecedented variety of medicinal uses to the plant. 5,6 Vitex negundo has been investigated for antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, hepatoprotective and bronchial relaxant. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Very few studies have been done to evaluate its analgesic activity and no study was done on analgesic activity of flowers of Vitex negundo.…”

“…However, the investigation of some other Vitex species have resulted in the isolation of iridoids 4,5,6 , diterpenes 7,8 , steroids 9 , flavonoids 6 and triterpenoids 9 . Several of previous compounds isolated from Vitex genus have shown antioxidants activities 10,11 . Among all secondary metabolites, phenolic antioxidants appear to be the most important since they have shown promising antioxidant activity in both in vivo and in vitro investigations.…”
