EFSA's approach to identifying emerging risks in food and feed: taking stock and looking forward

Abstract: The Emerging Risks Unit has the responsibility for coordinating EFSA's activities to establish a capacity for the identification of emerging risks. A process was trialled and further developed during a pilot period of 18 months from 2010-2012. This included the implementation of an operational procedure for emerging risks identification, the assessment of selected data sources, the testing of tools for collecting information, the consolidation of knowledge networks for sharing information and the development o… Show more

“…Unfortunately, the value of safety and safe behaviour is not always present in the practices of agri-food enterprises. Numerous food scandals over the years and their effects on consumer health and life are the reason why the lack of FSC is considered by researchers to be a new emerging risk (Griffith et al , 2010a; Fatimah, 2013), defined as a potential food or nutrition risk that may be a threat to human health in the (near) future (Noteborn and Ooms, 2005; Robinson et al , 2012). Yiannas (2009) and Griffith et al (2010a, b) were the first scholars who proposed definitions of FSC.…”

“…To achieve this objective EFSA has carried out extensive expert consultations and a testing phase to develop a transparent procedure. Following the adoption of a definition of "emerging risk" in 2007, ad hoc WGs along with a Network of MS have been convened to discuss and test data collection and evaluation methods in such a procedure (EFSA, 2007;Robinson, 2012;EFSA, 2014).…”

“…EFSA has worked intensively to develop a methodological approach to identify emerging risks since its inception in 2003 (Robinson et al, 2012). According to EFSA's operational definition of emerging risk adopted in 2007, an emerging risk is understood to be associated with the probability of a harm (i.e.…”
