“…Ravitch's (1951) patient had atrial fibrillation, as had a patient seen by Edeikei and Wolferth (1932). Schaub and Wegmann (1954) noted abnormal cardiac rhythms in 13 of a series of 108 patients with funnel chest (an incidence of 12%);' these included atrial ectopics-(5 cases), monofocal right ventricular ectopics (3 cases), nodal rhythm (2 cases), supraventricular tachycardia (2 cases), and one patient who had periods of sinus arrest with nodal escape beats. We conclude that in the case reported here the transient sternal depression was due to prolonged bandaging of the chest, and.-suggest that the associated cardiac arrhythmia resulted from the extreme distortion of the thoracic cage.…”

“…Right ventricular pressures have been recorded (Lyons, Zuhdi, and Kelly, 1955). Electrocardiographic (Dressler and Roesler, 1950;Martins de Oliveira, Sambhi, and Zimmerman, 1958;Schaub and Wegmann, 1954) and angiocardiographic (Garusi and D'Ettorre, 1964) studies have been performed, and also measurement of pulmonary function (Orzalesi and Cook, 1965;Polgar and Koop, 1963).…”

“…As a seriously deformed funnel chest may lead to troubles of the functions of the lungs and heart (Wegmann and Schaub, 1953;Schaub and Wegmann, 1954) operations should be limited to such cases only. Operating from a cosmetic point of view is not justified.…”

“…This procedure was applied by Dailey (1950), Sweet (1944) and Brodkin (1948). Rotation or removing the sternum is hardly practised today.…”
