“…Suspecting a possible association between the HLA alleles and genetic susceptibility for IDDM, as seen in other autoimmune disorders, researchers in the early 1970s documented relative risks in the two to threefold range for individuals who were HLA B8 and B15.l' Later, even stronger risks were found using these serologic techniques, as individuals with HLA DR3/DR4 were seen to have a relative risk ranging from 7 to 17. 16 Within the last year, however, an extremely strong association was found between IDDM and a short segment of the HLA-DQ beta chain gene. Using DNA amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and tested with DQ beta allele-specific oligonucleotide probes, researchers have found that the presence of an amino acid other than aspartic acid at position 57 of the HLA DQ beta chain (referred to as non-asp positivity) in the homozygous state is associated with a relative risk of 107 for the development of IDDM."…”
