Engineering Design with Digital Thread

Abstract: Digital Thread is a data-driven architecture that links together information generated from across the product lifecycle. A specific opportunity is to leverage Digital Thread to more efficiently design the next generation of products. This task is a data-driven design and decision problem under uncertainty. This paper explores this problem through three objectives: 1) Provide a mathematical definition of Digital Thread in the context of a specific engineering design problem. 2) Establish the feedback coupling … Show more

“…To successfully upscale AM methods from basic prototyping to fully-fledged manufacturing lines, the method's core reliance on digital technologies must be addressed [18]. Whether researching new designs and experimenting with new materials or manufacturing customised components, huge quantities of data are captured throughout a product's lifecycle [19].…”

“…The digital thread thus provides the DT with all information necessary to generate relevant submodels and functions. Figure 9 illustrates the approach of the digital thread as a mathematically describable decision problem along the life cycle of a product according to Singh and Willcox 121 …”

“…A DTH refers to a data-driven architecture that links all information generated and stored within the DTW enabling it to flow seamlessly through the entire PLM phase from invention to disposal [9,[27][28][29]. Mies et al [30] described the process of a DTH in the context of additive manufacturing technologies.…”
