The objectives of the study were to investigate the process of English writing from students of undergraduate international class, to describe problems faced by students in writing English, and to find out the factors which inhibit and improve their writing skills. There were six female respondents in international class. The study used documentation from the students’ work, open-ended questionnaire and interview as the instruments for data gathering. All the data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative approach. The results of this study showed that all students used four stages in the process of English writing: planning, drafting, editing and final revision. The students’ English writing problems covered content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanic. The factors which inhibit them in writing English included not being confident in writing English, not mastering grammar and vocabulary, and lack of practice in writing. The aspects which encourage them to write English were due to the demands as international class students, watching English movie, reading English books or journals, listening English songs and having ambition to acquire scholarship overseas.

Siswa SMA Negeri 1 Padang Bolak memiliki masalah dalam pelajaran bahasa inggris. Terdapat sebagian besar siswa memiliki kemampuan yang rendah dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris, baik dari pelafalan, tata bahasa (grammar) dan kosa kata (vocabulary). Siswa mengalami kesulitan untuk berbicara dalam bahasa inggris. Penelitian bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dengan menerapkan strategi pembelajaran three step interview pada siswa kelas XII MIA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Padang Bolak. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas, dengan metode penelitian kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data berupa pedoman observasi, dokumentasi dan lembar tes hasil belajar. Teknik analisis data kualitatif yaitu menggunakan triangulasi (cross check data), dan teknik analisis data kuantitatif yaitu membandingkan nilai rata-rata dan persentase siklus I dengan siklus II. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua kali siklus dan setiap siklus terdiri dari satu kali pertemuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan baik proses pembelajaran maupun hasil belajar siswa. Pada siklus I nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh siswa baru mencapai ketuntasan 60% dengan nilai rata-rata siswa 68.48, sedangkan pada siklus II ketuntasan menunjukkan peningkatan menjadi 84% dengan nilai rata-rata siswa 80. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Strategi Pembelajaran Interview dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dikelas XII MIA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Padang Bolak.

<table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tbody><tr><td valign="top" width="519"><p class="HeaderAbs"><em>This study aimed to define the impact of the cooperative learning model through virtual interviews with native speakers on learning outcomes and student perceptions in English course. This strategy is applied to overcome obstacles in the absence of offline learning (face-to-face in class) during the covid-19 pandemic; thus, online learning methods need to be modified to optimize student ability in English. A total of 135 students were given a questionnaire to determine their opinion about the virtual interviews and their learning progress. Half of the students taught through the virtual interview with native speakers (experimental group) and the others without native speakers (control group). Results showed that both groups showing increases in speaking confidence and their perception of the learning process, but the experimental group’s mean percentage was higher than in the control group. Therefore, the cooperative learning model's implementation can lead to positive outcomes since they could engage students in the English learning process. The implication of this study calls for the cooperative learning model implementation did not only make students active and motivated in learning, but also can improve the effectiveness and quality of learning. </em></p></td></tr></tbody></table>
