Genome Sequence of Cronobacter sakazakii Myovirus vB_CsaM_GAP31

Abstract: Cronobacter sakazakii is a pathogen that predominantly infects immunocompromised individuals, especially infants, where it causes meningitis. The genome of lytic C. sakazakii myovirus vB_CsaM_GAP31 has been fully sequenced. It consists of 147,940 bp and has a G؉C content of 46.3%. A total of 295 genes, including 269 open reading frames and 26 tRNA genes, were identified. This phage is related to Salmonella phage PVP-SE1 and coliphages vB_EcoM-FV3 and rV5.

“…In contrast, we have shown here that phage S144 is able to infect C. sakazakii, in addition to specific Salmonella serovars. Interestingly, the C-terminus of the tail fiber of the Loughboroughvirus phages (S144, SE4 and ZCSE2) is more similar to the otherwise unrelated Cronobacter phages GAP31 and GAP32 [71,72] than to the Rosemountvirus phages. While phages SE4 and ZCSE2 have been proven to infect many different Salmonella serovars, no bacterial strains from other genera were tested [35,43].…”

“…70%) of its genes were ORFans [67,68]. Since then five other phages have been reported to be rV5-like: coliphages vB_EcoM-FV3 [69], phAPEC8 [70] and phi92 [59], Cronobacter sakazakii phage vB_CsaM_GAP31 [71] and Salmonella phage PVP-SE1 [39]. To this list we can also add Salmonella phage SSE-121 (JX181824); and, coliphage Delta Y that Andrey Letarov and Alla Golomidova (Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology, RAS, Moscow, Russia), isolated from horse manure, and partially sequenced.…”

“…However, before application, it is necessary to obtain sufficient information about the use of a particular phage as a controlling agent to guarantee its safety. Presently, only nine Cronobacter phages have been reported, including five myoviruses (GAP31, GAP161, ESSI-2, ES2, and CR3) (610), three siphoviruses (ESP2949-1, phiES15, and ENT39118) (1113), and the unclassified phage ENT47670 (GenBank accession no. HQ201308).…”
