Genome-wide identification and analysis of elongase of very long chain fatty acid genes in the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Abstract: Very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), such as sphingolipids, are components of cellular lipids, which are essential for cell proliferation. Mutations in the genes that encode proteins participating in VLCFA biosynthesis may cause inherited diseases, such as macular degeneration. Elongases of very long chain fatty acid (ELOVL) are enzymes that are involved in the biosynthesis of VLCFAs. Here, a total of 13 ELOVL genes, distributed across three chromosomes, were identified in the silkworm genome; all the ELOVL m… Show more

“…The reason may be related to the different contents and proportions of lipids in the artificial diet and mulberry leaves, or the process of lipid metabolism in the silkworm body may have changed due to the intake of the artificial diet. Sphingolipids belong to the very long chain fatty acids, are a component of cellular lipids, and play an important role in cell proliferation (Zuo et al, 2018). Moreover, sphingolipids can promote the growth of cell neurites (Kwon et al, 2003).…”

“…Unigene2015 (cuticular protein analogous to peritrophin with one chitin-binding domain), Unigene16835 (hypothetical CP), Unigene29662, Unigene1363 (Cuticlin 1), and Unigene3721 (cuticular protein with Rebers and Riddiford motif) encode cuticular proteins . Unigene1442 [acyl-CoA 11-( Z )-desaturase] , and Unigene29000 (elongase of very long-chain fatty acid 4) encode enzymes possibly involved in the synthesis or modification of cuticular hydrocarbons and lipids. , Unigene10918 (laccase-2) encodes a key enzyme responsible for cuticle tanning. , Unigene2037, Unigene9511, and Unigene23358 belong to the newly discovered Osiris gene family, which is essential for development but also plays a role in phenotypic plasticity and in immunity/toxicity responses . In Tribolium castaneum, the RNAi of Osiris genes arrested the metamorphosis process and resulted in a high lethality rate …”

“…Both FAS products and fatty acids taken up from the diet are further elongated into very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) [122]. Elongases of very long chain fatty acid (ELOVL) are enzymes that are essential for the biosynthesis of VLCFAs and elongation of long-chain fatty acids [129]. ELOVLs, which are conserved from microorganisms to mammals, play key roles in various biological processes [130].…”
