Abstract
Introduction:The high cost of an Intensive Care Unit is justified because it centralizes the care of critically ill patients who require human resources and complex infrastructure, as well as groundbreaking technology for diagnosis and treatment. However, budget constraints of health institutions have caused both quantitative and qualitative limitations in the nursing professionals in these and other sectors. Objectives: Quantify the nursing workload and estimate the direct costs of nursing care. Patients and Method: This is a quantitative study using a descriptive and prospective approach carried out at an adult intensive care unit of a Public Regional Hospital in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State. Results: The average amount of TISS-28 was 24.7 points. Patients had a mean age of 55.28 years; there was a predominance of males and patients in Class II -physiologically stable patients, but requiring intensive nursing care and continuous monitoring. TISS-28 average of 24.7 points demanded 13.09 hours of nursing care, the daily variable cost of R$ 237,32. The day with the highest demand presented a TISS-28 488 points; that is, 259 hours of assistance at a cost of R$ 4.695,67. The day with lower demand presented a TISS-28 301 points, requiring 160 hours of assistance at a cost of R$ 2.900,80. Conclusion: In adult ICUs, the daily average nursing workload was 175 hours, corresponding to 330 points in the TISS-28 and the average daily cost of direct assistance of R $ 3.172,75. While, the TISS-28 average per patient was 24.7 points, which required 13.09 hours of nursing care, the daily variable cost of R $ 237,32 per patient.
