Curcuma longa L. rhizome essential oil is a valuable product in pharmaceutical industry due to its wide beneficial health effects. Novel applications in the agri-food industry where more sustainable extraction processes are required currently and safer substances are claimed for the consumer are being investigated. This review provides information regarding the conventional and recent extraction methods of C. longa rhizome oil, their characteristics and suitability to be applied at the industrial scale. In addition, variations in the chemical composition of C. longa rhizome and leaf essential oils regarding intrinsic and extrinsic factors and extraction methods are also analysed in order to select the most proper to obtain the most efficient activity. Finally, the potential applications of C. longa rhizome oil in the agri-food industry, such as antimicrobial, weedicide and a food preservative agent, are included. Regarding the data, C. longa rhizome essential oil may play a special role in the agri-food industry; however, further research to determine the application threshold so as not to damage crops or affect the organoleptic properties of food products, as well as efficient encapsulation techniques, are necessary for its implementation in global agriculture.

The essential oil of Citrus microcarpa peels was applied in many fields, and the methods to improve the efficiency of citrus exploitation were increasingly concerned. In this study, citrus essential oil was extracted from calamondin by hydrodistillation. This study was carried out to investigate the factors affecting the distillation of essential oils. The highest performance of the distillation process was 2.45 % with optimal conditions (material-water ratio of 1:3 g/mL, time of 2 h, the temperature of 120 ºC). Moreover, calamondin (Citrus microcarpa) peels oil extract was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The primary compound of calamondin essential oil include limonene 96.925 %, β-myrcene 1.424 %, 1R-α-pinene 0.561 %, cyclohexene 0.343 %, 1R-α-pinene 0.561 % and β-cubebene 0.598 %.

Nghiên cứu này nhằm mô hình hóa động lực học của quá trình chưng cất thủy điện của vỏ cam (Citrus sinensis) để hiểu và tối ưu hóa quá trình chiết xuất. Ngoài ra, nghiên cứu này, lần đầu tiên, xác định các thành phần hóa học của dầu vỏ cam bằng cách sử dụng cả mô hình động học bậc nhất, mô hình rửa và khuếch tán đồng thời. Kết quả chỉ ra rằng mô hình rửa và khuếch tán đồng thời mô tả tốt hơn cơ chế chưng cất thủy điện của tinh dầu vỏ cam. Thời gian tối ưu, tỉ lệ nước-vật liệu và mức nhiệt để chiết xuất lượng tinh dầu cao nhất được tìm thấy lần lượt là khoảng 80 phút, 3:1ml/g và 60%. Tinh dầu màu vàng với mùi mạnh và năng suất 2,3% (v/w) được chiết xuất bằng thiết bị chưng cất thủy điện. Ngoài ra, tinh dầu vỏ cam thu được trong điều kiện tối ưu tiến hành phân tích thành phần bởi GC-MS. Limonene là thành phần chính của tinh dầu (98,343%). Từ nghiên cứu này, có thể ứng dụng làm tăng giá trị thương mại của tinh dầu tại Việt Nam.
